Create charts and tables from your data

3 min readLast checked:

In short

Give Slaide the values, units, periods and sources, then ask for a chart or table in your document. Review the labels and calculations before using the result. PowerPoint export can preserve table objects and chart geometry as shapes or images; charts are not native PowerPoint chart objects with an editable data sheet.

What data should I provide?

Attach your source file or put a small data set directly in the request. Name the period and unit for every value. State whether figures are actual results, forecasts or example data; a visually plausible chart is not evidence that its numbers are correct.

  • Include clear category labels and a consistent unit, such as revenue in EUR thousands.
  • Identify the source and date. For researched figures, ask for links and check them yourself.
  • Describe how missing values should be shown. A missing figure is different from zero and should not be silently filled in.

If the values require a model, ask for a spreadsheet with formulas first. That makes assumptions and calculations easier to inspect than a collection of numbers painted onto a slide.

Should I use a chart or a table?

QuestionUseful format
Which category is larger?A bar chart with a consistent scale and visible units.
How did a value change over time?A line chart with ordered periods and a stated time range.
What are the exact values?A table with clear headers and number formats.
What makes up a total?A part-to-whole chart only when the categories describe the same total.
Example request

Page 2: show a bar chart of revenue in EUR thousands: Q1 120, Q2 145, Q3 132, Q4 160. Source: our supplied example data, not researched figures. Show the values above the bars and label the unit. Do not add growth claims.

How do I change or correct a chart?

  1. Step 1: Identify the page and object

State the page number and the chart or table title so the change targets the intended comparison.

  2. Step 2: Give the replacement data

Supply the corrected value and its unit, or attach the corrected source. Say whether the axis, labels and other values should stay unchanged.

  3. Step 3: Check the whole comparison

Read every label and compare the result with the source. Changing one value can alter scales, totals, percentages and the main conclusion.

Do not rely on bar lengths alone. Read the axis baseline, categories and values. If a figure is uncertain, mark it as an assumption or remove it rather than turning it into a precise-looking visual. See Check facts and numbers.

What remains editable after export?

PowerPoint export treats a supported table as a table object. Chart geometry may become individually editable shapes; more complex artwork may remain an image. A group of editable shapes does not have PowerPoint's chart data sheet or its chart-type controls.

Open the exported file in the program your audience uses and inspect labels, fonts and page boundaries. For export-specific limitations and the difference between shapes and document objects, see PowerPoint export.

Frequently asked questions

Can Slaide invent missing figures for my chart?

Do not treat invented figures as factual data. Supply the missing values, ask for research with sources, or label a necessary assumption clearly. Missing values should not silently become zero.

Can I edit exported chart data in PowerPoint?

Generated charts are not PowerPoint chart objects with a data sheet. Their shapes or imagery preserve the visual. Keep a separate spreadsheet when you need editable calculations.

How do I correct one number in a table?

Name the page and row or column, give the replacement value and unit, and ask Slaide to update affected totals. Check the resulting table against the source before using it.
