> Open your PowerPoint as a .pptx (up to 30 MB) and Slaide rebuilds the slides as editable pages and builds new ones in the same design. You can also start a new document from an earlier Slaide document with Use as template, or set up your brand. A .potx template file is not accepted, so save it as .pptx first.

## How can I use my own template or company design?

Three ways work on every account: open your PowerPoint file, reuse an earlier Slaide document as a template, or set up your brand. Pick the one that matches what you have.

| Way | Use it when | Where to find it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Open your .pptx | You have a company deck or a template file with real slides | Library: **Open PowerPoint, PDF or Word** |
| Use as template | A document made in Slaide, or shared with you, has the look you want | The actions menu of a document card in the library |
| Brand | You have a style guide with colors, fonts and a logo, but no deck | **Brand** in the top navigation |

The next sections cover the first two ways. For colors, fonts and logo, see [Brand kit: your colors, fonts and logo](https://help.slaide.de/brand-kit).

## How do I start from my PowerPoint file?

Open the file as a .pptx from the library: Slaide rebuilds each slide as an editable page and builds new slides in its design. More in [Import a PowerPoint or PDF and keep editing](https://help.slaide.de/import-a-presentation).

1. **Save the file as .pptx**. The import opens .pptx files up to 30 MB. A template saved as .potx or in the old .ppt format is not accepted, so open it in PowerPoint and save it as .pptx.
2. **Open the import**. In the library, click **Open PowerPoint, PDF or Word**, drop the file on the field or click it, then click **Import document**. Or attach the .pptx in the box where you describe a new document: the first .pptx you attach there is opened as the document.
![The import page after choosing a PowerPoint file: the file name is shown in the area and the Import document button is below it.](https://help.slaide.de/images/help/import-file-en.webp)
3. **Wait for the rebuild**. A bar counts the pages, for example **Rebuilding page 4 of 12 ...**. Then Slaide says how many pages were imported and how many are fully editable, and opens the document. If your plan imports fewer pages than the file has, click **Open document** to continue.

**Example request:**

> Add three slides in this design: a market overview, our approach and the next steps. Topic: introducing our onboarding service to enterprise customers.

## What does Slaide take over from my file?

Slaide takes the design and the content of each slide: text, pictures, shapes and lines become editable elements, and Slaide reads the theme fonts and colors, each slide's layout, repeating texts such as a footer, and the speaker notes. The assistant gets a summary of that design and is told to keep your typography, colors and logos unless you ask for a change.

- **Notes:** speaker notes come along with their slide and stay unchanged unless you ask for a change.
- **Fonts:** a font that Slaide has is shown as it is. A font it does not have, such as a proprietary company typeface, appears as a substitute in Slaide, and line breaks can differ. See [Fonts in PowerPoint, Word and PDF exports](https://help.slaide.de/fonts-in-exports).
- **Animations and transitions:** not read. On paid plans, slides you do not change keep theirs in the export; slides that Slaide changes or adds do not.
- **Charts, tables and diagrams:** rebuilt where Slaide can. If a slide holds something it cannot rebuild directly, Slaide reads the whole file through a PDF route instead; some slides then arrive partly as images, and the import message says how many are fully editable.

## How do I reuse a document I made as a template?

Click **Use as template** in the actions menu of a document card in the library. Slaide creates a new document with the same pages and page format, opens it and leaves the original as it is.

![The actions menu of a document card in the library with Add to favorites, Use as template, Rename, Duplicate, Move to folder, Export PDF and Delete.](https://help.slaide.de/images/help/library-card-menu-en.webp)

1. **Open the library**. Go to the [library](https://app.slaide.de/library) and find the document with the design you want.
2. **Open the actions menu**. On its card, click the three dots (**Actions for** and the title), then **Use as template**.
3. **Wait for the copy**. Slaide copies the design and opens the new document. Copying does not use credits.

**Example request:**

> Use this design for our Q4 customer update: results of the quarter, three customer stories and the plan for next quarter.

On this first request, Slaide tells the assistant that the pages are a template: keep the look and structure, rewrite the content page by page, and add, remove or reorder sections if the new topic needs it.

> **What the copy contains:** The copy holds the pages, the page format and the images shown on them. Chat history, versions, attached files, web sources and the original .pptx are not copied, so an export of the copy is drawn from the Slaide pages.

> **Tip:** A document shared with you by link works the same way: on the shared page, click **Use as template, free**. You need to be signed in, and whoever shared it can switch this off with **Allow use as template**.

## What do I get when I export?

Click **Export** and choose **PowerPoint** to get an ordinary .pptx. When the export carries no Slaide badge (Plus, Pro and Max, or a document bought individually), slides you did not change are normally taken unchanged from your original file while that file is still attached to the document; changed and new slides are drawn anew. On the Free plan, every slide is drawn anew and carries the Slaide badge. See also [What stays editable in the PowerPoint export](https://help.slaide.de/powerpoint-export).

> **PowerPoint on your master:** If Slaide could read a master in your file, **Export** also lists **PowerPoint on your master**. It places pages that were built on your layouts and says which pages it could not place. The regular **PowerPoint** export stays available.

> **Limit:** A chart that Slaide changes comes back as editable shapes or as an image, not as a PowerPoint chart with a data sheet.

## What are the limits?

The file must be a .pptx up to 30 MB, and your plan decides how many pages are imported.

| Topic | What applies |
| --- | --- |
| Imported pages | Free: the first 3 slides. Plus: the first 12. Pro and Max: the whole file, up to 150 slides. The import message says how many are left out. |
| Credits | Importing and copying with Use as template do not use credits. Your requests to the assistant work like in any document. |

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I upload a .potx template file?

No, the import opens .pptx files. Open your template in PowerPoint, make sure it holds a few real slides in your layouts, such as a title slide and two content slides, and save it as .pptx. Slaide builds on the slides it can read.

### Does Slaide use my slide master?

Slaide reads layouts, fonts and colors from the slides in your file and builds new slides to look like them. New and changed slides come back as ordinary text boxes, shapes and pictures, so check them in PowerPoint if they must be bound to your master.

### Is my original file changed or sent somewhere?

The import creates a new document and keeps your original file attached to it; the file on your computer is not changed. Your files are stored with Supabase in the EU. To create or change a document, your request and the content it needs go through OpenRouter to language-model providers in the USA; their use for training is contractually excluded, and access by US authorities cannot be ruled out entirely. Leave out confidential slides before you upload. See [Security](https://www.slaide.de/security) and the [privacy policy](https://www.slaide.de/privacy) (as of October 2026).
